Have you ever heard of a business that solves a problem that you did not even know existed or maybe did not see as a problem? Or maybe someone telling you “find your niche” and related statements? Well, niche products and services cater to a subset of the entire market with very focused products and services that fulfill their very specific needs and requirements.
In simple terms, a niche market is a very small segment of the market that has very specific requirements that they want to be met. Consumers of such products and services do not mind paying a little extra than usual since they are aware of the personalization & customization that these offerings cater to.
Niches are not just for small indie brands with quirky merchandise but big corporations can and should also adopt niche marketing to stand out from the rest. In an otherwise saturated market, niche marketing helps you catch the attention of the consumers while your competitors resort to the same old consumer acquisition/retention strategies.
Some examples of niche markets may be pet owners, environmentally-conscious consumers, the LGBTQIA community, travelers and various other niches that businesses can cater to. However, despite their different interests and needs, your strategy to communicate with them and dominate your niche remains the same. There are some methods that may help you identify your niche, like-
- Assessing whether a particular niche/interest exists and if it’s scalable
- Find what your customer needs and what is not fulfilling his current needs
- Determine how your offerings can stand out from the competition or the simpler alternatives in the market.
- Timely & effective implementation of your niche strategy
Niche marketing definitely takes time, effort, deep research and analysis of the market and audience but reaps equally good benefits. It is undoubtedly one of the profitable business strategies with various benefits like enjoying greater margins as consumers don’t mind paying a little more than usual, lesser spend on marketing as the product/service, being specific, does the work, greater competitive edge as differentiation is highly sought after.
While niche marketing might seem like an ideal choice and excite the entrepreneurial spirit in you, it comes with its challenges and therefore some factors that must be taken into account, before serving a niche market are as follows-
- Niche marketing doesn’t have to revolve around a product/service but a ‘need’ — ‘Lefty’s- The Left Hand Store’ makes products for a specific demographic- left-handed people. It offers a wide range of products but ONLY for left-handed people. Therefore, never limit yourself to a unique/product or service but strive towards finding a solution for a specific market.
- Pay attention to the exact requirement ( or you might miss the window/be ahead of time) — Vegan, cruelty free and environmentally friendly products are the need of the hour. As more and more people are turning into conscious consumers, Bee’s Wrap noticed and took the change and provided a plastic-free alternative to food storage. This was only possible as they were more attentive to the concerns and conversations around them.
- Customization & personalization is the key- Even if you operate in an industry that sells mass consumer products, you can still carve in your niche- just by offering customization that caters to a more specific audience. For instance, Nomatic’s luggage and travel bags are like any other yet very subtle differences fulfill the needs of people who want to bring their work with them. Nomatic specifically designs bags and luggage for people who work on the go.
- Surround your customer from all sides- Like Lenskart was the first omnichannel eCommerce brand that sold only eyewear. While they were an eCommerce platform initially, they opened up brick & mortar stores, despite serving only a niche market. Therefore, no matter what niche you are serving, the more you surround your TG with your product, the more are the chances of it being successful.
While there are various other businesses that have created a successful niche and are thriving in it, there still lies a lot of potential in the various products, services and ideas that already exist or are to come to existence. So go out and find your niche.
